Qantas gives up on third daily Tokyo Haneda service
November 17th 2025
Qantas Airways has handed back one of its Tokyo Haneda slots after it was unable to utilise the allocation in the 14 months since it was awarded the precious takeoff and landing right at the close-in Tokyo airport. Read More » Currently, the Australian carrier flies twice a day from Sydney to Haneda Airport, and from Brisbane and Melbourne to Tokyo Narita. In September last year, it was allocated a third Haneda slot after Virgin Australia shuttered its Cairns-Haneda service. At the time, Qantas announced plans to restructure its Tokyo operation to include one daily flight from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to Haneda. However, media reports indicated the oneworld alliance member was unable to obtain suitable landing and takeoff times at Haneda to utilise this third slot within its existing network and fleet requirements. As a consequence, it has opted to maintain its existing schedule and return the slot allocation. Australia’s International Air Services Commission (IASC), which manages the country’s traffic rights, said Qantas formally requested the slot allocation be revoked on November 7. The IASC revoked the slot on November 11.
