Air New Zealand to cancel 5% of its flights due to fuel price surge
March 13th 2026
Air New Zealand (Air NZ) will cancel 5% of its flights, or around 1,100 services, through early May due to the surging jet fuel prices. Read More » The cuts will affect about 44,000 customers of the 1.9 million flying through early May, Nikhil Ravishankar, Air New Zealand CEO, told Radio New Zealand. The service will be reduced mostly on domestic flights, such as to Marlborough and New Plymouth. The airline plans to cut fewer long-haul services. Ravishankar said the U.S. routes operated by Air NZ have become a more popular stopover on the way to Europe since the widespread closures of Middle Eastern airspace. "People want to get to Europe still, and over the U.S. airspace we can get them into Europe, and that’s what we’re focused on doing," he said.
