Japan’s two largest carriers to double fuel surcharges on some routes

Japan Airlines (JAL) has raised fuel surcharges for tickets purchased domestically between May 1 to June 30 "due to fuel prices rising to an abnormally high level". Read More » The level of fuel surcharge will double on certain routes - from Japan to South Korea or Taiwan the surcharge will be 6,500 yen (US$41), up from 3,000 yen currently, while from Japan to East Asia it is rising to 19,500 yen, from 9,500 yen. The highest surcharges are on long-haul routes to Europe, North America and Australia at 29,000 yen currently and 56,000 yen from May 1.
Similarly, All Nippon Airways (ANA) is lifting fuel surcharges on its international routes in response to the rising cost of jet fuel. The Star Alliance member’s fuel surcharge for long-haul routes will also rise to 56,000 yen from May 1, from 31,900 yen currently. Its lowest fuel surcharge will be on flights to South Korea and Vladivostok at 6,700 yen, up from 3,300 yen until April 30. For flights to Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore, ANA’s fuel surcharge is rising from 16,300 yen to 29,000 yen.
