May 20th 2026
The Singapore Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) has published its final report into Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, which suffered extreme turbulence enroute from London Heathrow to Singapore on May 21 2024. Read More » One passenger died and 144 passengers and crew were injured among the 229 people on board the 777-300ER registration 9V-SWM during the turbulence event. The flight was diverted to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. The TSIB said in the final report the actions of the flight crew were understandable and appropriate in the circumstances, noting the cloud cover over the area at the time. The report noted the weather radar on board the 777-300ER did not return an indication of storm clouds about four minutes before the turbulence event. The TSIB said it was unable to understand why the flight crew did not see the widespread clouds on the aircraft’s radar. The report said the incident did suggest an issue of under-detecting of the weather conditions by the weather radar system. Its recommendations included calling on Boeing to develop guidance for flight crews to check whether the radar system was showing accurate weather.
