Indonesia’s transport minister, Ignasius Jonan, has told his nation’s airlines he is prepared to give away air rights to competitors, including the Middle East carriers, if Garuda and other Indonesian airlines do not launch more international routes. Read More » “I like competition and I think that through competition airlines operate even better,” he said at a major industry conference in Bali in November.

The comments were a complete contradiction of an earlier statement from another minister in the 12-month old government of president Joko Widodo. He said Garuda and its subsidiaries should concentrate on developing their domestic and regional networks before they expanded internationally.
