Indonesia’s transport minister, Ignasius Jonan, has told his nation’s airlines he is prepared to give away air rights to competitors, including the Middle East carriers, if Garuda and other Indonesian airlines do not launch more international routes. The comments were a complete contradiction of an earlier statement from another minister in the 12-month old government of president Joko Widodo. He said Garuda and its subsidiaries should concentrate on developing their domestic and regional networks before they expanded internationally.
