China Eastern to order ten more B777s, Juneyao and Okay Airways to acquire A330s
March 24th 2016
Shanghai’s China Eastern Airlines, a SkyTeam member, will order ten more B777-300ERs, Aviation Week has reported, citing airline sources. Read More » In April 2012, the carrier signed on for 20 -300ERs, of which eight frames have been delivered. Last Friday, China Eastern launched its Pudong-Chicago nonstop service with the B777, one of many route additions this year, including Madrid, Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Brisbane and Prague.
In August, China Eastern placed a commitment for 15 A330s. In the longer term, it is looking at the B787, B777X and A350 as fleet renewal options.
At fellow Shanghai carrier, Juneyao Airlines, which means “auspicious” in Mandarin, Aviation Week has suggested that management is studying a potential A330 order. Juneyao operates an all-Airbus single-aisle fleet on domestic and short regional services, but earlier this year said it planned to expand into the “international market” after applying for permits from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
In line with its expansion plans, Juneyao chairman, Wang Junjin, last week said the carrier is considering joining an alliance. According to Reuters, talks with "several major global airline alliances" are underway, but CAPA suggested “any decision to join an alliance would almost certainly result in Juneyao selecting Star [Alliance]”.
