HKIA confirms tax to foot third runway bill

Starting August 1, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will impose a new outbound and transit passenger tax to fund its expansion, most notably its much-needed third runway. Read More » Slated to be built on reclaimed land, the runway carries a massive HK$141.5 billion ($18.26 billion) price tag.
The new levy will vary depending on the route and cabin class. Passengers flying short-haul economy will be subject to a HK$90 ($11.50) fee, while short-haul passengers in first or business class will be charged HK$160. For long-haul passengers, the fees for economy and first/business class tickets are HK$160 and HK$180, respectively.
The controversial third runway is not expected to be completed before 2023. HKIA will reach its design capacity by year-end. It remains uncertain how the local Airport Authority plans to ease the growing bottlenecks at one of the world’s busiest airports until then.
