The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) appears to be serious about reducing flight delays caused by airspace congestion on the Mainland. Read More »

The regulator would open one-way air passages on three trunk routes between Beijing-Guangzhou, Shanghai-Kunming and Shanghai-Lanzhou, said CAAC director, Feng Zhenglin.

The one-way corridors, being trialled between Beijing and Kunming and Guangzhou and Lanzhou, have significantly eased airspace congestion on these routes, CAAC officials have said.

Almost a third of all flights in China were late last year, with ATC delays the most common culprit. China’s airspace is tightly controlled by the People's Liberation Army Air Force. "We will work with the air force to run a trial in central and southern regions to explore ways to reform airspace management mechanisms," Feng said.

In the first half of this year, Mainland passenger boardings increased 10.8% year-on-year. A total of 151 new schedules were opened by 24 carriers, with most of the links connecting cities in China’s central and western regions, the CAAC said.

During the first half of 2016, Chinese carriers took delivery of 171 new aircraft, including 23 wide bodies, 140 single-aisle aircraft and seven regional jets. China Eastern Airlines received 28 airliners followed by Air China (15), China Southern Airlines (12), Xiamen Airlines (12) and Beijing Capital Airlines (11).
