With no new major airplane programmes under development, manufacturers and customers alike are looking at the engine makers to provide the technical innovation to better their products. Read More » Connecticut-based CFM International took centre stage at this week’s Farnborough Air Show when it signed multibillion dollars’ worth of new engine orders.

AirAsia Group selected CFMI’s LEAP-1A to power the 100 new A321neos it signed for at the show, in a deal valued at $2.7 billion at current list prices.

Neo customers have a choice between the LEAP-1A and the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan, but AirAsia has historically selected CFM engines for all its A320 family aircraft. Including Wednesday’s order, AirAsia has signed for 728 LEAP-1As and 474 CFM56-5Bs for its A320ceos.

South Korean Asiana Airlines also endorsed the LEAP-1A, choosing the power plant for its 25 on-order A321neos. The deal also includes spare engines and a long-term maintenance support agreement.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC) placed a top-up order for CFMI’s 56-5Bs to power another 20 A320ceos (plus five options) it has on order. Dublin-based AWAS selected the 56-5B for another ten on-order ceos. AWAS has more than 150 aircraft running on CFMI engines in its portfolio.

The alternative engine option for the A320ceo is International Aero Engines’ (IAE’s) V2500. BOC Aviation announced firm orders for 18 shipsets of V2500s to power new A320ceos in its order book. The aircraft have all already been placed on lease with customers, BOC said.

Rolls-Royce (RR) received an endorsement from Gulf Air, with the Bahrain carrier selecting the Trent 1000 to power the ten B787-9s in its order book plus options for six more.

RR and Airbus this week said they have created an integrated parts availability service for Cathay Pacific Airways’ A350 fleet, including airframe and engine Line-Replaceable-Unit (LRU) components. The offering integrates the Airbus Flight Hour Services (FHS) and the RR TotalCare Availability service through one operational interface. Cathay has ordered 48 A350s, with its launch A350 now in service.
