The main runway at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was closed from 4:30pm to midnight on Monday due to emergency pavement repairs that became necessary after a large piece of asphalt came lose and damaged an EVA Air B747-400 that had just landed. Read More »   The closure of runway 06-24 resulted in widespread delays and cancellations, with some flights  diverted to Clark International Airport.

NAIA said the runway was apparently damaged by recent flash floods which caused a nine  meter long section of asphalt to separate and severely damage the B747’s flaps. The return flight to Taipei was cancelled.

Ironically, EVA Air has been complaining about the runway conditions at its Taoyuan International Airport home base for a long time, and regular runway closures and potential damage to its planes were unacceptable.

In Manila, Philippine Airlines (PAL) has launched the “myPAL Upgrade” platform, enabling “eligible passengers” to bid for an economy to business class upgrade up to 36 hours before departure. The programme was launched with technology from Plusgrade with upgrades available across PAL’s international network.

At Cebu Pacific Air, the airline is the Asia-Pacific launch customer for OpenAirlines' fuel and carbon reduction solution. Under the agreement, OpenAirlines' software will continuously analyse the flight data of all 57 aircraft in Cebu Pacific's fleet and the 48 aircraft on order. “With this new fuel program, our passengers can continue to enjoy the lowest fares possible for their flights," the airline’s  CEO, Lance Gokongwei, said.
