From first-quarter 2017, Air Belgium plans to take to the skies, offering long-haul low-cost services with a focus on Asia, particularly China, the carrier’s general manger, Niky Terzakis, has told ch-aviation. The airline is looking to acquire either Airbus or Boeing long-haul aircraft.
Air Belgium was founded by a group of former TNT Airways employees that left the cargo airline as it was sold to ASL Airlines Ireland earlier this year and subsequently rebranded.
Lufthansa’s Brussels Airlines will launch its first service to the Asia-Pacific in March with a five-weekly A330 service to Mumbai. “With more than 50,000 passengers per year, Mumbai is the third most important intercontinental destination from Belgium,” the airline’s CCO, Lars Redeligx, has said.
Brussels used to have daily connectivity to India via Jet Airways. However, the latter shifted its European base from Brussels to Amsterdam earlier this year, meaning there are currently no nonstop links between the Belgian capital and the subcontinent.
