The Evergreen Group-owned airline added to its order book with Boeing when it placed 18 firm orders plus six options for the B787-10, with deliveries from 2018. EVA also operates 11 A330s (six -200s, five -300s). It is gradually retiring the -200s and it has another -300 on order. As a result its future widebody fleet will comprise 62 Boeing jets and six Airbus aircraft. EVA has three B747-400s in active passenger service. These will be phased out by March, replaced by B777-300ERs.
The Taipei-headquartered airline this week announced it had acquired a B787-10 full-flight simulator from L-3 Link Simulation and Training for $17.7 million.
Last month, EVA signed a codeshare agreement with Star Alliance fellow carrier, Avianca. EVA passengers can connect through Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to San Salvador on Avianca and Avianca passengers can take EVA-operated flights to Taipei from Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council (ASC) is investigating the cause of a landing incident involving an EVA B747-400F last week. Upon touchdown ten tyres on the aircraft blew up, causing damage to the plane and closing the runway for six hours.
EVA’s Taoyuan International Airport hub is infamous for its poor runway surface conditions, with pieces of asphalt regularly coming off, triggering FOD warnings, delays and closures.
