Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) launched a daily Narita-Mexico City route last month. It had been considering the service for some time, but lacked the equipment to operate the route without pay load restrictions. The carrier has commenced the Mexico B787-8 nonstop service with enhanced Rolls-Royce engines. Mexico City has an altitude of more than 2,000 metres above sea level.
On the Mainland, China Southern Airlines, last week announced a three times weekly Mexico City B787-8 route from Guangzhou via Vancouver. It will be the first Chinese carrier to serve Mexico City. HNA Aviation’s Beijing Capital Airlines had applied for Beijing-Mexico City rights, but the carrier did not confirm the route. Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways also is understood to be considering Mexico as a destination.
Mexico City received its last scheduled service from the Asia-Pacific in 2010 when Japan Airlines (JAL) terminated its Narita-Vancouver-Mexico B747-400 triangular route. Mexican flag carrier, AeroMexico, flies to Narita five times a week and to Shanghai three times weekly. Both B787 routes have an intermediate stop in Tijuana.
