Mega Maldives Airlines terminated operations on May 2, but insisted that it will relaunch services when it has undergone a thorough restructuring and recapitalization drive. Read More »

“We are well aware of our customer and tourism stakeholder expectations of us," said airline CEO, George Weinmann. "The Board of Directors and Executive team felt that it was necessary to focus on the restructuring and improving our product and service. We will look forward to returning to flying very soon with a renewed fleet that can service established, under-served and emerging markets.”

The airline used to operate up to three B767-300ERs on flights from Male to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It previously said the Chinese tourism market was “very vulnerable” to currency, safety and political fluctuations.

The Maldives had been anticipating significant growth in Mainland tourist arrivals for years, but passenger numbers have fallen short of the estimates and Chinese carriers have been pruning services to Male for 18 months.

From Beijing, only Beijing Capital Airlines serves Male three times a week, while from Guangzhou, the only option is China Southern Airlines’ twice-weekly rotations. China Eastern Airlines plans to resume thrice-weekly Pudong-Male flights in July.
