American Airlines to launch Beijing-Los Angeles in November

In a filing to the U.S. Department of Transportation, American has asked the regulator for some leeway in meeting the start-up date for the new route from the current September 16 deadline. It explained that the new slots it has received would not be available until October 29. It is seeking another extension.

In late July, American senior vice-president for corporate affairs, Stephen Johnson, said American’s US$200 million investment in China Southern Airlines hinged on a “slot exchange”, without elaborating further. A recent China Southern stock filing indicated the investment has been approved.
