The confirmation makes Sharp the second most powerful executive in command at Virgin Australia, following chief executive John Borghetti.

Sharp had been acting in the role for four months after the sudden departure of John Thomas, who had initially been considered as a potential successor to chief Borghetti.

“Rob has a wealth of commercial expertise including specialist experience in operating in a multi-brand environment, is backed by strong operational credentials and has a track record of innovation,” Borghetti commented on the appointment.

At the same time, the Brisbane-headquartered airline has also announced the appointment of the airline's public affairs chief, Danielle Keighery, to the newly-created role of group executive of brand, marketing and public affairs.
