The Star Alliance member will fly to Wellington, four times a week via Melbourne, beginning on May 3.

The Singapore-Sydney-Canberra route will be operated by a four-class B777-300ER, seating four passengers in first class, 48 in business, 28 in premium economy and 184 in economy class.

Singapore-Melbourne-Wellington will be serviced by a two-class B777-200, with 38 business and 228 economy class seats.

SIA became the first international airline to offer a scheduled service to Canberra when it launched the route in September 2016. It has recorded strong passenger numbers between Singapore and Canberra, but Canberra-Wellington underperformed. The airline also flies to Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Christchurch and Perth.

SIA will soon be joined in Canberra by Qatar Airways. The Doha-based oneworld member will launch a daily Doha-Sydney-Canberra triangular route on February 12, also to be operated by a B777-300ER. A third international premium carrier, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways, has been rumoured to be considering Hong Kong-Canberra flights after airline management met with Canberra Airport officials.
