Measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), international passenger traffic grew 2.6%, which underlined relatively stronger demand for short-haul routes. Available seat capacity expanded 1.5%, which led to a 0.8 percentage point increase in the average international passenger load factor (PLF) to 76.5% for the month.
During the first 10 months of the year, the number of international passengers carried by Asia-Pacific airlines grew an encouraging 6.9%, to an aggregate total of 171.9 million. Demand in RPKs increased 5.7% during the same period, whilst available seat capacity expanded 4.1%.
As a result, the international PLF averaged 78% during the first 10 months, 1.2 percentage points higher than the previous corresponding period.
FREIGHT
Air freight demand among Asia-Pacific carriers fell in October, continuing the downward trend seen since the last quarter of 2010. Demand in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs) fell 5.4%. Weak demand for Asian-produced consumer goods contributed to the decline.
At 67.3%, the average international air freight load factor (FLF) matched the same month last year, on a 5.6% contraction in available freight capacity.
During the first 10 months of the year, international air cargo demand fell 4%, which reflected depressed global trading conditions. Combined with a 3.4% contraction in available freight capacity, international FLFs for Asia-Pacific carriers was 0.4 percentage points lower at 66.3%.
NOVEMBER 2012
Preliminary figures for last November show that, overall, airlines based in the Asia-Pacific carried a combined total of 17 million international passengers, an increase of 8.4% compared with November 2011, supported by healthy demand on regional routes.
In RPK terms, international passenger traffic grew 7.9%, while available seat capacity expanded by a slower 3.5%. This resulted in a 3.1 percentage point increase in the average international PLF to 76.7% for the month.
International air cargo demand in FTKs was 0.9% above the levels of November last year, a slight improvement on the weaker trend so far this year. Combined with a 1.9% decline in offered freight capacity, the average international FLF was 1.8 percentage points higher, at 67.7%.
