The new 881,000sqm terminal features 58 aerobridges and 397 check-in desks, many of them automated.

SkyTeam carriers Xiamen Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Saudia Airlines and Kenya Airways are the first airlines to operate from the terminal. The main occupant of Terminal 2 will be Guangzhou-headquartered China Southern Airlines. Asia’s largest airline will start operating from the new facility in phases from May.

Guangzhou’s Baiyun is the Mainland’s third-largest airport, following Beijing Capital Airport and Shanghai’s Pudong Airport.

Guangzhou Airport is hopelessly congested. In 2017, it processed 65.8 million passengers, up 10.2 year-on-year, and significantly exceeding its design capacity of 40 million passengers. The airport is expected to handle more than 80 million passengers and 2.5 million metric tons of cargo by 2020.
