Hainan Airlines has unveiled ambitious plans to launch approximately 50 international routes from Hainan Island by 2023, including connecting Sanya with destinations in Australia, Europe and North America. Read More »

This follows last week’s announcement from the Chinese government granting citizens from 59 countries 30-day visa-free entry to Hainan, from May 1. The visa-free entry will apply to arrivals and departures from Hainan only; it will not include travel to or from the Mainland.

Hainan Airlines currently operates 53 routes to 40 international destinations from Hainan. In this week’s announcement, the carrier said it would grow the number of international services from Hainan to 100 over the next five years. The government hopes to attract 2 million inbound tourism arrivals to Hainan by 2023.

Hainan parent, HNA Group, owns three airports in Hainan: Haikou, Sanya and Qionghai. Haikou was China’s 17th busiest airport in 2017, handling 22.6 million passengers. Sanya was ranked 20th busiest; that airport recorded 19.4 million passengers last year. Sanya Airport is currently being expanded to handle 38 million passengers by 2025 and 70 million by 2045.
