In January, the former Malaysian government agreed to pay Houston-based Ocean Infinity up to US$70 million if the firm found the missing B777-200ER jetliner by April. That deadline was extended twice.
In its most recent update, Ocean Infinity said it had started searching a third search site on May 7. By May 13, it had covered 33,000km² of that site, having scanned 53,000km² of ocean floor in the two other locations.
Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. The circumstances of the flight’s disappearance are considered to be the aviation industry’s biggest mystery.
Loke said the new government, which took power after the May 9 elections, is committed to transparency and will release details for public scrutiny in due time, although the minister stopped short of specifying a timeline. “As minister of transport I'm committed to make sure every report, every detail of the report, will be [made public],” he said.
