Informed sources told Orient Aviation this week China Airlines (CAL) is preparing to split its single aisle order between Airbus and Boeing. Read More »

Specifically, Orient Aviation has learnt CAL was close to announcing an order for up to 15 A320neo Family aircraft and up to 15 B737 MAX jets.

CAL was due to make a narrow body replacement order last year, airline chairman, Nuan-Hsuan Ho, told Orient Aviation. The airline operates 19 B737-800s, some of them as old as 19 years. Its low-cost subsidiary, Tigerair Taiwan, flies eleven A320s.

Separately, CAL this week said it would replace its decade-old Taipei-Hong Kong-Jakarta A330-300 daily triangular route with a Kaohsiung-Hong Kong-Jakarta B737-800 service from July 1.

The switch to the B737 will cut capacity by almost 50%, from 307 seats on the A330 to 158 on the B737. CAL will continue to fly daily A350-900 nonstop flights to Jakarta, a daily A350 to Bali and a daily A330 to Surabaya.

CAL has strong code share ties with Garuda Indonesia. CAL has placed its ‘CI’ designator on Garuda flights to Yogyakarta, Semarang, Bandar Lampung, Pontianak, Medan, Balikpapan, Pekanbaru, Makassar and other Indonesian cities. A new Bali to Perth code share was introduced in May.

Rival EVA Airways operates a daily A330 to both Jakarta and Bali. EVA does not offer any code shares out of Indonesia
