Manila-headquartered Cebu Pacific Air this week inked an agreement with Switzerland-based IPR Conversions to convert two of its ATR 72-500 passenger aircraft into freighter planes. Read More » This will make Cebu Pacific the only carrier in the Philippines with a dedicated cargo fleet.
Cebu Pacific expects to receive the first of two converted aircraft in the fourth quarter. The freighters will continue to be operated through its wholly-owned subsidiary, CebGo.
“We will be able to offer cargo capacity that no other carrier in the Philippines can provide,” said Cebu Pacific president and CEO, Lance Gokongwei. “With the freighter aircraft, we will further support the growing needs of the logistics industry, especially as the Philippines' e-commerce businesses expand rapidly.”
The conversions will be done by IPR Conversions at the Sabena Technics facilities in Dinard, France, and include the installation of a large cargo door, which will allow standard containers and pallets used throughout the industry to be loaded. Upon completion, the converted ATRs will have space for seven AKE Unit Load Device (ULD) containers and can carry more than seven tons of cargo.
