If materialized, adding those routes would mark a significant expansion for AZAL in North- and Southeast Asia, where its current operations are limited to three times a week B767-300ER flights connecting Baku and Beijing.

The Azerbaijani flag carrier has a very heterogeneous fleet, comprising four A319s, seven A320s, three A340-500/600s, three B757-200s, two B767-300ERs and two B787-8 Dreamliners. The carrier has outstanding orders for ten B737 MAX 8s, with the first due in Baku in 2019, delayed from an original November delivery date.

AZAL has a low-cost subsidiary, Buta Airways. That airline operates six E190s on short stage length services and expects to take delivery of two additional aircraft of the same type before the end of the year.

AZAL is headquartered in Baku, adjacent to Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The 26-year-old carrier is run by AZAL president Jahangir Askerov.
