Twice in two weeks domestic Southeast Asia consolidation was strongly spoken of but called off. Last week Thai AirAsia shareholder Asia Aviation disclosed it was discussing a stake in Nok Air. This week it ended disccusions.
Indonesia AirAsia meanwhile tried but apparently failed to invest in Citilink, owned by Garuda. “Citilink is doing better than AirAsia, even under Garuda’s new management,” Garuda Indonesia president Ari Askhara reportedly told Indonesian magazine Tempo.
Indonesia AirAsia was interested in combining its network with Citilink. Indonesia AirAsia is stronger internationally than domestically while Citilink is stronger domestically than internationally.
