Airbus and China announced an order for 300 aircraft during President Xi Jinping’s visit to France. The order was misconstrued by some media as a statement against Boeing in the wake of scrutiny over its 737 MAX model, yet the order has its origins well before either of the two 737 MAX crashes.
The Airbus order for 300 follows a November 2017 order from China for Boeing aircraft – also 300.
The order was placed by central government and there was not detailed a breakdown of aircraft and airline. The only official statement is that of the 300 aircraft, 290 are A320neo aircraft and 10 A350 XWBs.
China tends to order narrowbody aircraft evenly from Airbus and Boeing. But for long-haul widebody aircraft, Boeing has been dominant with the 777 and 787. The A350 is making inroads. Airbus would like to see more A350 orders as well as A330neos.
