Two low-cost carrier terminals (LCCTs) will open in 2019, one purpose-built and one converted. First is Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta's converted terminal 2F being a LCCT from 1 May, airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II said. AP II expects the LCCT to be used by 10 LCCs as well as two unnamed airlines from India and China.
Indonesia is prioritising the LCC sector as it targets an increase in overseas visitors. AP II previously said visitors arriving on full-service airlines grew 7% while those using LCCs grew 55%.
International visitor growth is also the objective at Nagoya Centrair, whose LCCT (Terminal 2) will open on 20 September. The facility targets a passenger throughput of 4.5 million, comprised of 3m international passengers and 1.5m domestic passengers. The facility was a key part of the AirAsia Group selecting Nagoya as the home for its second foray in the Japanese market with unit AirAsia Japan. Other LCCs will also use the LCCT.
Nagoya’s LCCT is 550 metres from the main access plaza, which has railroad and ship links. It will be a seven minute walk using moving sidewalks. Nagoya’s main facility, Terminal 1, is 300 metres away.
The terminal is 45,000 square metres over two storeys comprising a main building and satellite. The facility has been built to include later phases. Tokyo Narita also built its LCCT with room for expansion, and found growth was going to be needed earlier than planned.
The airport says there will be 14 gates accommodating 10 parking spots. Check-in counters, security screening and boarding gates can be operated for domestic or international flights. Nagoya will have Japan’s first LCCT with self-service bag drop.
