Eight stretched 787s will join 14 Rolls-Royce powered 787-9s. Read More »

Air New Zealand (Air NZ) has concluded its wide body aircraft review by making a commitment for eight Boeing 787-10s. It has options on another 12, which can be swapped to the -9.

Boeing was seen as the favourite for the order because of Air NZ’s existing 777 and 787 fleets. Air NZ does not operate any Airbus wide body aircraft, but is in the midst of re-fleeting its narrow body fleet with A321neos.

Notably, Air NZ already has selected GE’s GEnx engines for its 787-10s. Rolls-Royce Trent 1000s power Air NZ’s 14 787-9s. One of the type has been delivered and another is due later this year. Air NZ has been particularly affected by problems with the Trent 1000 and has had to lease in capacity. In 1H2019, it had up to five 787s grounded.

The airline had historically selected Rolls-Royce when there was an option. The airline’s 777-200ERs and 787-9s are powered by the Derby-headquartered manufacturer. Its 777-300ERs have GE as the sold engine option.

The 787-10s are due for delivery from late 2022 to 2027. They will largely replace the airline’s 777-200ERs, which the airline plans to retire by 2025.
