Korean Air Chairman Cho Won-tae said he was interested in participating in Asiana Airlines’ capital and strategy restructuring at a press conference at the IATA AGM. “It is a very sensitive issue to comment on, but we are looking at the deal,” Cho said without elaborating further.
Recent confirmation that Jeju Air major shareholder, AK Group, was interested in Asiana raises the question of how regulators would view an effective tie-up between Korea’s second and third largest airlines. A Korean Air-Asiana deal would be even more significant.
Korea’s aviation regulator and the Korea Free Trade Commission have bolstered accountability and competition oversight in the last two years.
