AirAsia’s first A330neo was on exhibition at the Paris Air Show with the group using the occasion to announce the outcome of its fleet review. AirAsia had been studying how many A320neo orders to up-gauge to the A321neo, but the decision to up-gauge almost all of the type was unexpected.
AirAsia converted 253 A320neo orders to the A321neo. The conversion plus a previous A321neo order brings AirAsia’s A321neo order backlog to 353, making the group the largest customer for the type.
After the conversion, AirAsia will have only 14 A320neo for delivery, based on its order book at the end of May. That quickly brings an end to new deliveries of the type that powered the group’s growth after initially launching with 737 classics. AirAsia has taken delivery of 224 A320 family aircraft as of June 18.
AirAsia flagged that last year’s intent to order 34 more A330neos was subject to a review of how many A320s it would up-gauge. But last year’s A330neo deal is still subject to finalisation, Airbus confirmed to Orient Aviation.
