Jetstar Japan plans to grow from 25 aircraft to 35 by fiscal year 2023. The all-A320 operator will take A321s to boost capacity and permit the LCC’s first flights to Southeast Asia. Jetstar Japan is on a growth track after successive profits.
Of the 10 additional aircraft, three will be A321LRs. The maximum configuration is 244 seats. Jetstar Japan will likely confirm its configuration by the end of the year, CEO Masaru Kataoka told Aviation Wire.
Jetstar has not announced the variants of the other seven aircraft, but the A321neo is favourable. Although it incurs larger airport charges due to its higher weight, the A321neo’s fuel consumption is similar to the A320ceo, which comprises all of Jetstar Japan’s present fleet. The A321 is also flexible since it allows capacity growth – upwards of 30% - in constrained airports, including Fukuoka, Naha and Sapporo.
The LCC’s home base is at Tokyo Narita with additional bases at Osaka Kansai and Nagoya. Within the fiscal year, Jetstar will decide on the location of a fourth base. After reaching 35 aircraft, Jetstar will consider a fifth base.
