Beijing Daxing’s opening was unusual. For months, there was no specific target opening date, with the official line being that the airport would open by September 30. In mid-September, there were rumours the airport was days away from commencing services.
The rumour mill geared up again this week and this time it was right, with the airport officially opening on September 25, taking media by surprise. China’s president, Xi Jinping, officiated at the ceremony, which gives China its first city to have two major intercontinental airports.
Various domestic airlines had inaugural flights from the new airport, but initially regular service will only be from China United, the LCC of China Eastern. Other domestic airlines, as well as foreign airlines, will commence Daxing operations in late October with the start of the northern winter scheduling season, China Daily said.
