Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have announced a proposed joint venture (JV) that would deepen the pair's existing code-share agreement. Read More »

The two Star Alliance members said in a joint statement on January 31 the JV sought to increase passenger traffic between Singapore and Tokyo as well as cover markets including Australia, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Currently, SIA and its regional wing, SilkAir, serve six destinations in Japan - Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Osaka Kansai, Tokyo Haneda and Narita. SIA also operates a fifth freedom Tokyo Narita-Los Angeles service. ANA serves Singapore from its Tokyo Haneda and Narita hubs.

“ANA is excited about strengthening its ties with Singapore Airlines, a fellow Star Alliance member that shares our passenger-oriented philosophy and has distinguished itself as a true global leader in service and convenience,” ANA president and CEO, Yuji Hirako, said in a statement.

“We have worked closely with Singapore Airlines for many years and we are excited to take this partnership one step further. The joint venture will help ANA and Singapore Airlines build upon their reputations for superior service, further differentiating both airlines from the competition.”

SIA CEO, Goh Choon Phong, said the proposed JV "underscores our commitment to the important Japanese market and our valued partner ANA".

“Through this partnership customers would be able to enjoy increased flight frequencies and travel convenience and access the strong connectivity at both the Singapore and Tokyo air hubs, while enjoying the industry leading products and services ANA and SIA are renowned for,” he said.

The JV is subject to regulatory approval.

Separately, ANA said on January 29 its order for 18 A320neo narrow-bodies had been changed to include two A321LRs. The revised order is 16 A320neo and two A321LR. The change was "in order to take the company's future business plans into account", ANA said.

SIA signed JVs with United Airlines in 2011 and Lufthansa Group in 2012.
