Korean Air (KAL) has chosen Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines for its fleet of A321neos. Read More » The P&W PW1100G-JM geared turbofan (GTF) engine will power KAL’s A321neos that are scheduled to begin arriving at KAL next year. The engine selection was announced at the Singapore Airshow this week.

KAL and P&W will enter discussions for the Korean Air Maintenance and Engineering Division to join P&W's PW1100G-JM GTF maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) network.

“We look forward to continued efficiency, fuel savings and environmental benefits of these latest A321neo aircraft powered by the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine,” KAL executive vice president and chief operations officer, Soo-Keun Lee, said. “Joining the GTF MRO network is a significant milestone that will allow Korean Air to enhance its MRO capability.”

KAL is an existing Airbus operator with 10 A220-300s regional jets, 29 A330 wide-bodies and 10 A380s in its fleet. The SkyTeam alliance member ordered the 30 A321neos, with options for 20 more of the type, in 2015.

“Pratt & Whitney has shared a long-standing relationship and history with Korean Air dating back to the late 1960s. We are honoured to power their next-generation fleet,” Pratt & Whitney chief commercial officer, Rick Deurloo, said.

Separately, P&W announced Taiwanese LCC, Tigerair Taiwan, had selected PW1100G engines for its 15 A320neos on order.
