Japan Airlines (JAL) said this week it would operate more international flights in July compared with its flying schedule this month. Read More »

Flight schedules showed JAL planned to operate 358 international flights next month, which would be about 7% of its pre-coronavirus pandemic capacity for the month.

The July figures compare with 167 international flights for June, or 4% of the schedule of a year ago, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Although entry restrictions continue to be implemented in various countries, the carrier has decided to operate scheduled flights to selected international destinations in the U.S., Europe and Asia to support customers planning to return to Japan and for those intending to travel for business and personal reasons," JAL said.

JAL said it would operate 960 cargo-only flights in July by utilising passenger aircraft on routes to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Oceania.

Japan remains largely closed to foreign visitors, with those on a list of 111 countries prohibited from entering the country.

But some countries, including Japan, were beginning to open their boarders. Local Japanese media reported this week the government was working on a scheme to allow up to 250 business travellers per day from four countries – Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam – admittance to the country and hoped to launch the scheme during the Japanese summer.

A decline in coronavirus cases has prompted an easing of restrictions on businesses in the capital Tokyo, with the Tokyo metropolitan government no longer requiring entertainment venues such as karaoke bars, arcades and amusement parks to close as part of efforts to stop the spread of the disease.
