Qantas Group and American Airlines to extend joint venture agreement
March 1st 2021
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has ruled in a draft determination it planned to reauthorise American Airlines and Qantas Group’s joint business agreement on routes between Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. for five more years. Read More » “The alliance is unlikely to result in any significant public detriment, because the ACCC considers American Airlines would be unlikely to operate its own trans-Pacific services (or materially expand its trans-Pacific capacity and frequency) in the absence of its alliance with Qantas,” ACCC commissioner, Sarah Court, said in a statement. The two carriers have coordinated marketing and sales, freight, pricing, scheduling, distribution strategies, yield and inventory management, frequent flyer programs, lounges, joint procurement and product and service standards during the life of the current agreement.
The trans-Pacific market lost one competitor in 2020 when Virgin Australia (VA) ended services to the U.S. after entering voluntary administration and being acquired by new owners.
