Australia’s domestic airline market suffered 67% decline in January

Australia's domestic carriers flew 1.7 million passengers in the first month of 2021, down 67.6% from 5.1 million a year ago as travel restrictions ate into peak summer demand, the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) has reported. The busiest Australian domestic route in January was Gold Coast-Melbourne with 125,700 passengers. Melbourne-Sydney, traditionally one of the world's busiest city pairs, transported 33,400 passengers in January, a 95.5% collapse from 742,800 air travellers in the same month in 2020.
