Taiwan wins more support for U.S. Customs and Border pre-clearance facility

Nine U.S. legislators have written a letter in support of Taiwan's quest to open a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance immigration facility at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. Read More » The five Senators and four congressmen said Taiwan would be an "outstanding choice" for a new CBP preclearance facility. It would allow travellers to the U.S. to complete immigration formalities at the departure airport before boarding their U.S.-bound flights. "Such a facility would improve ease of travel between the United States and Taiwan and reinforce the importance of our relationship with Taiwan," the March 25 letter to U.S. CBP senior official performing the duties of the commissioner, Troy Miller, said. Taiwan applied for a CBP preclearance facility in September 2020. The U.S. has 16 preclearance facilities located across Canada, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and several Caribbean countries. Taiwan's China Airlines, EVA Air and Chicago-headquartered United Airlines operate nonstop passenger flights between Taipei Taoyuan and various cities in the U.S.
