Australians rush to book government backed cut price air tickets

About 200,000 government subsidised half-price domestic flights have been snapped up by consumers after they went on sale today, figures from Australia's two largest airline groups, Qantas and Virgin Australia (VA), showed. Read More » The Tourism Aviation Network Support (TANS) program, announced last month, offered 800,000 seats to 15 destinations across Australia at half price if bought via airline websites. Qantas Group said it had sold about 130,000 fares across its combined Qantas and Jetstar networks. VA told local media the airline was likely to record the most bookings in a single day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reservations and flight searches were up 600% compared with the previous week, it said. "There are plenty of places in Australia crying out for visitors," Australian deputy prime minister, Michael McCormack, told reporters in Sydney today.
