Japan Airlines cuts back domestic flights as new State of Emergency disrupts key markets

Japan Airlines (JAL) said yesterday it had revised downwards its May domestic schedule as COVID-19 infections in the country increased. Read More » The airline has cancelled 449 domestic flights from May 6 to May 20, bringing to 9,352 the services it will eliminate for the month. JAL plans to operate 65% of its normal domestic flying pattern in May, a decline of one percentage point from the 66% operation rate it announced on April 22. "The carrier is expecting a slight decline in travel demand in response to the number of COVID-19 cases reported in Japan," JAL said. It added affected passengers would be reaccommodated on alternative flights. Japan recorded its 10,000th death from COVID-19 this week. The government recently issued a fresh State of Emergency in the Hyogo, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo prefectures.
