In an encouraging sign for the return of air travel in Australia, Sydney Airport said yesterday its east-west runway had re-opened for flight operations. Read More » It had been used to park about 50 aircraft in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Australian gateway airport said the reopening would allow maintenance work on the airport's main north-south runway and offer a more even distribution of air traffic across the city's airspace. “We have had some encouraging signs with the opening of the New Zealand bubble and the gradual improvement in domestic passenger traffic, but as of March 2021 we were still 68% down overall on where we were in March 2019,” Sydney Airport chief aeronautical officer, Dhruv Gupta, said.
