Japan Airlines operates domestic flight with two types of sustainable aviation fuel

Japan Airlines (JAL) said it operated a flight on June 17 using two different types of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced in Japan. Read More » Flight JL515 from Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo Shin-Chitose, flown by 350-900 JA03XJ, featured SAF produced by Mitsubishi Power, Toyo Engineering Corporation and JERA Co from wood chips and SAF from IHI Corporation using algae blended with traditional jet fuel. "To achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, the JAL Group is aiming to switch to SAF for 10% of its whole fuel amount," JAL said.
JAL rival, All Nippon Airways (ANA), has operated a domestic flight from Tokyo Haneda to Osaka Itami with SAF made from microalgae supplied by IHI Corporation. ANA said flight NH31, operated by 787-8 JA832A, was the first flight in the world to use SAF certified to meet the standards set by ASTM International's annex seven specifications for jet fuel.
