Australian domestic passengers improve 25.7% month-on-month in April

Australia's domestic carriers flew 3.5 million passengers on scheduled commercial services in April, figures from the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) showed. Read More » This was an improvement of 25.7% from 2.8 million passengers in March and a big increase from 150,000 passengers in April 2020. Despite the encouraging month-on-month growth, Australia's domestic aviation market for the reported period was well below levels recorded before the pandemic. In April this year airlines carried 32% fewer passengers than the 5.15 million domestic passengers they transported in April 2019. Capacity was down 24.8% for the month against April 2019. The busiest domestic route for the reported 30 days was Melbourne-Sydney, with 463,300 passengers, followed by Brisbane-Sydney (204,900 passengers) and Gold Coast-Sydney (180,400 passengers).
