Australia's Federal Court rules Qantas contravened local work place laws

Australia's Federal Court has found Qantas contravened local laws when it outsourced ground handling work at 10 airports that had previously been undertaken by 2,000 in-house employees. Read More » The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), which brought the case to court, said the judgment was a "watershed moment" for workers in Australia. “Senior Qantas management has serious questions to answer after this judgment," TWU national secretary, Michael Kaine, said. "The judge made it clear Qantas targeted its ground workers for outsourcing because they were united to a fight for decent standards at the airline." Qantas said it "fundamentally disagrees" with the judgment and intended to appeal, adding the judgment did not mean it was required to reinstate workers or pay compensation or penalties. “Qantas was motivated only by lawful commercial reasons and this will be the subject of our appeal," Qantas group executive, John Gissing, said.
