Domestic passenger numbers in Australia fall 30.5% in June

Australia's domestic market recovery stalled in June as stay-at-home orders were introduced and interstate borders closed following a fresh outbreak of COVID-19, figures from the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) show. Read More » BITRE said 2.4 million passengers travelled on domestic flights in June, down 30.5% month-on-month from 3.4 million domestic air travellers in May. Capacity, or available seat kilometres (ASK), was cut by 19.8% from May to June. Passenger load factor dipped 5.4 percentage points to 62.8% for the month, from 68.2% in May. "The domestic aviation industry paused its recovery in June 2021 due to additional domestic travel restrictions," the BITRE report said. "In June 2021 revenue passenger numbers were 50% below the pre-COVID level of June 2019." In May, revenue passenger numbers were 31% below the levels recorded in May 2019.
