Air New Zealand cuts network after country returns to lockdown

Air New Zealand (Air NZ) will operate seven return flights on five domestic routes tomorrow, August 20, with all other flights in the network cancelled after the New Zealand government put the country into Alert Level 4 lockdown on Tuesday night following the discovery of a case of community transmission of COVID-19 in Auckland. Read More » For the August 21 to August 24 period, Air NZ will fly two routes out of Auckland, to Wellington and Christchurch, with the schedule for the remainder of the network to be assessed later. "We want to remind customers we have been here before and have built capability to work through the changes," Air NZ CEO, Greg Foran, said.

In other Air NZ news, the Star Alliance member will suspend passenger services between Australia and the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island from August 30 "due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19 in Australia and the suspension of quarantine free travel between Australia and New Zealand". Qantas will service the route between the Australian mainland and Norfolk Island until June 30 2022.
