Australia's June international traffic 94.2% below 2019 levels

Approximately 194,290 international passengers flew into and out of Australia in June, representing a 94.2% decline from pre-COVID-19 levels of 3.3 million in June 2019, the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said in a report. Read More » The June figure also was 9.3% below the 214,246 international passengers transported in May. Capacity was at 735,264 seats for June, 82.6% lower than the 4.2 million seats available in the same month in 2019. In June, the New Zealand government suspended quarantine-free travel from several regions in Australia, including Sydney, because of an increase in COVID-19 cases across the country. The suspension was then broadened to include all of Australia and remains in place today. Air New Zealand was Australia's largest international carrier in June, with 91,234 passengers, representing 47% of the market. Australia's Qantas was next with 21.8% and Singapore Airlines third at 6.5%.
