Langkawi travel bubble to start with local visitors on September 16

The Malaysian government said the island of Langkawi will welcome local visitors from September 16 under a travel bubble scheme. Read More » The pilot project will be used to prepare other tourist destinations for reopening, Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture said. The Malaysian government has said previously that more locations will reopen when COVID-19 vaccination rates reached 80%. Media reports said only fully vaccinated people will be allowed to travel to Langkawi. Figures show about half of Malaysia's population has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Malaysia Airlines CEO, Captain Izham Ismail, told local media the carrier has four daily flights to Langkawi and would adjust its schedule to meet demand. AirAsia Malaysia CEO, Riad Asmat, said the government’s decision to commence the travel bubble "bodes well for the recovery of the whole tourism industry in Langkawi".
