China Eastern Airlines reports 59.8% August decline in its Mainland air traffic

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) said passenger numbers on its domestic network fell 59.8%, to 3.5 million, in August, from 8.7 million in July. Read More » The figure was a 64.8% decline from pre-COVID-19 levels of 10 million domestic passengers in August 2019. The SkyTeam alliance member's monthly traffic report noted there had been fluctuating numbers of COVID-19 cases in various parts of China since May. "The COVID-19 pandemic still has a significant impact on the air transportation business of the company, the time span and severity of which has created great uncertainty," CEA said. The Shanghai-headquartered carrier reduced domestic capacity by 45.9% for the reported month compared with July. Domestic available seat kilometres (ASK) were 43.3% below CEA's August 2019 operations. During the month, CEA accepted an A320neo and one ARJ21 and relinquished an A320 and a 737-700.
