Bamboo Airways signs US$2 billion engine deal with General Electric

Vietnam’s Bamboo Airways has signed a US$2 billion deal with U.S. engine manufacturer, General Electric, for GENx engines and maintenance packages for its 787-9 Dreamliners. Read More » The signing, witnessed by Vietnam president, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, established deliveries would begin in 2022. Bamboo plans to operate the B787-9s on direct Vietnam U.S. flights. “The selection of the GEnx engines for our Boeing 787-9 aircraft will help increase the operational efficiency and service quality of Bamboo Airways on Vietnam-U.S. nonstop flights as well as many potential international routes,” said Bamboo Airways director-general, Dang Tat Thang. Bamboo signed an agreement in February 2019 to add 10 B787-9s to an existing order of 20 of the type. It has previously partnered with GE through CFM International, the joint venture between the American manufacturer and Safran Aircraft Engines. The airline introduced CFM’s LEAP-1A engines to Vietnam on its A321neos and said it planned to hold talks soon about engine and maintenance packages for 50 A321neos (30 firm and 20 options) ordered from Airbus. On Wednesday, the young airline announced AVIAWORLD had been appointed its U.S. general sales agent.
